How to Prepare Chicken and Rice for Dogs

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Homemade chicken and rice dog food is a bland food source that's often recommended by veterinarians to help dogs recover from diarrhea. This protein and starch combination can also stimulate appetite when a dog is ill or recovering from surgery. While it's not recommended for long-term use, cooked chicken and white rice has enough nutritional properties to put your dog back on the road to wellness.

Steps

  1. Purchase the best quality chicken you can afford to limit your dog's exposure to toxins. Boneless chicken breasts are best since any cooked chicken bones create choking hazards for your dog. If you must purchase chicken with bones, be prepared to thoroughly de-bone it after cooking.
  2. Buy a package of short or long grain white rice. Avoid quick cooking rice for this dog food recipe, since this product has lower nutritional value than its long-cooking counterpart. Brown rice should also be avoided because the fiber it contains will expedite bowel movements instead of slowing them down, which is the goal when treating diarrhea.
  3. Place the chicken in a large stock pot. Fill with enough water to cover the chicken. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook the chicken about 30 minutes or until the meat is white inside (or when meat falls off the bone, if using bone-in chicken).
  4. Remove chicken from water and allow it to completely cool on a platter. Reserve the broth for later use.
  5. Pull any bones out of the cooled chicken (if using bone-in chicken). Separate the meat and toss the bones.
  6. Skim the fat from the top of the cooled chicken broth, then pour the resulting fluid into a container. Measure 2.5 cups (591.47 ml) and pour back into the pot.
  7. Bring the chicken broth to a boil.
  8. Measure 1 cup (236.58 ml) of white rice and pour into the boiling chicken broth. Return to boil then lower to a simmer. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook for 20 minutes. The rice will be slightly soggy and soft when finished.
  9. Allow the cooked rice to completely cool. The process can be expedited by placing rice in a baking pan and fanning it with a sheet of cardboard.
  10. Add the cooked chicken to rice and blend together with a fork.
  11. Serve your chicken and rice dog food in a dog dish.

Tips

  • Consult with your veterinarian prior to making a dog food recipe. Your vet can ascertain if your dog's current condition can be alleviated with a bland diet like this or if medical intervention is necessary.

Warnings

  • Dogs cannot process seasoning the way humans can. Do not use salt, pepper or any other spices when making homemade dog food.
